SPU Welcomes NASA Astronomer

Seattle, WA – Dr. Jennifer Wiseman, senior project scientist for the NASA Hubble Space telescope, is the keynote speaker for Seattle Pacific University’s annual Day of Common Learning on Wednesday, October 19. The public is invited to hear her talk at 10 a.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion titled “Stars, Galaxies, Planets, and Life: An Amazing Universe to Behold.”

At NASA, Wiseman is also chief of the laboratory for the Exoplanets and Stellar Astrophysics. In addition, she directs the Dialogue on Science, Ethics, and Religion program for the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Wiseman has served as a Congressional Science Fellow in the American Physical Society where she worked with the science committee of the U.S. House of Representatives.

After Wiseman’s morning address, there will be two concurrent one-hour sessions of forums, seminars, and panel presentations led by faculty, staff, and students. Two of the many seminars offered are “International Perspective on Science and Faith” and “Contributions of Women to Science.” All sessions will be offered twice, from 1 p.m. to 1:50 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.

The Day of Common Learning is a campus in-service day during which faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to participate in a learning community outside the regular classrooms.

The events are free and open to the public. Free parking is available in Crawford, Ross, and Dravus parking lots. For more information, contact SPU News and Media Relations Manager Tracy Norlen at tcnorlen@3588612.com or 206-281-2977.
